6 years ago when I was a beginner on bass I had no idea where to begin. I had no clue what I should learn first or what the best order to learn things was.
I also could not play anything, and that sucked, as I so badly wanted to be able to. For the first year I really learnt very little.
To be honest with you my bass spent most of its time in the corner of the room collecting dust. I wanted to play but just didn’t know how.
I felt stuck, frustrated and thought about giving up. I began to think that maybe I wasn’t cut out to be a musician. I started to think that my dream of playing bass would stay just that, a dream.
After spending all the money on a bass it seemed silly to never learn how to play it…
So I was determined and stuck with it, but knew what I was currently doing wasn’t working. It was time to make a change and get a new plan.
So I loaded up my web browser and started looking for online bass lessons. I’d tried the free lessons on some sites and had watched little clips on Youtube.com but I knew I needed something new, something that worked.
I decided that I was going to invest in myself, invest in my dream of one day getting up on stage and performing in front of everyone.
I’d imagine the look of shock and delight on my friends and families faces when I started playing bass in a band.
Failure was not an option and I was willing to do whatever it took.
So I decided to start buying books, DVDs and courses and within a few weeks I was playing songs.
Then a few weeks after that I was in my first band.
A few weeks after that I was finally on stage playing music!
I could not believe it… me… playing bass guitar… that sound coming through the amplifier… that groovy sound was… me!
I was so happy and could not believe how quickly I had gone from having no clue to this wonderful moment of entertaining a crowd of people.
I realised that with the right knowledge, bass is easy. When you don’t have the information you need, it feels like there is no hope. Then when you finally “get it” it all clicks into place and you begin having more fun then you have ever had in your life.
I can tell you from experience that there is nothing in the world like being able to play an instrument. The thrill and excitement it bring to your life is incredible. (Not to mention how cool everyone thinks you are!)
Fast forward to today and after countless gigs, recording my own music and having the time of my life I now teach bass guitar. I help people just like you who don’t yet have the information they need to get them started and on the road to success.
